Writing tech stuff at
Hey folks. I'm work in InfoSec during the day, but enjoy writing about tech, privacy and web stuff in my spare time.

The analytics rabbit hole

I wrote something on my blog a week or so ago (link) about the rabbit hole of analytics and I think it fits quite succinctly into this section of WPMRR?

The TL;DR is that I was always reviewing my analytics and worrying that it was never enough. I'd see people posting things like "how I went from 0 - 10,000 subscribers in 2 months" and I'm there with my ~650 subscribers after nearly a year.

It deflated me. It just makes me ask myself why do I bother? Off I go to my analytics program and I try to reverse engineer what I'm doing wrong. I'm at the top of Google for X queries, do I need to write more content? Less content? Better content? It all becomes too much.

...and then I get an email from a reader and a conversation starts about a topic I've written about, or a link I've included in my newsletter. At that point it all seems worth it.

...then I see the next post about someone else's amazing success, and honestly, I feel a little jealous and the whole thing starts again.

I decided to do away with that rabbit hole and remove analytics from my site completely. I'm going with "ignorance is bliss". As for those success stories I read about, I just need to try and be happy for them, and be happy with the relative success my site has had.

Basically, I need to get over myself. 🙃

I'm rambling now, but my point is, do any of you folks have these pangs of jealousy? Or think that you could/should be doing more? Or working better? If so, how do you manage that?

I hope it's not just me haha!

Loving this place...suggestion

This community looks really great and I can't wait to see it evolve. Quick suggestion from me, if I may be so bold...

Newsletters are the latest tool of the Internet kool kidz (myself included, although I'm not a kool kid). It would be great if we could have a space dedicated to discussing newsletters.

I think newsletter sponsorships/advertising etc. are an important part of many internet companies, so I think it could be relevant here.

Apologies if this already exists and I've missed it. I'm not the sharpest tool in the box at times! 🙃

Hey there folks! 👋

I'm Kev, and I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you over here.

Unlike many of you, I'm not a freelance developer/writer/something else really cool. I have a day job where I work in the Information Security industry for a large Financial Institution.

HOWEVER, in my spare time I really enjoy web design/development, writing (on both my blog and my newsletter) and learning new stuff.

That last part is why I'm here. I'm looking to meet new people in the WordPress/web dev community, and continue to learn. Hopefully I can impart some of my (very limited) wisdom on some of you fine folks too!

Hope to talk soon,
